Addition to Building 22

This project is about adding an extension on the roof of the Architecture Building at Carleton University, Ottawa. The concept of this buildings is about openness of the spaces versus the privacy of those.

In order to achieve the concept of the openness, the structure of the roof has less columns as possible. Also, every space is looking to one another. For example, the assembly room is looking down at the studios. Then, the circulation of the upper floor is looking down at the public areas. Finally, the new fifth floor of the extension is looking at the fourth floor of the existing studios. Furthermore, all the important public spaces are open on the whole height of the extension.

Finally, to achieve to concept of privacy, implied space is used. For example, the circulation of the sixth floor is creating a lower ceiling for the labs. A change of floor material is also used to accentuate this implied space. Another strategy is used for the new flexible room. Pieces of wood distant from one another is added on the open space. Sometimes, it can be nice to take a look at what is happening in this big room. However, when there is a crit going on, privacy is a good thing because people are not feeling like they are in a lion cage. Students and teachers can still have a glance at what is happening without judging the whole project.
