Mixed-Use Building

This project is in the Polish neighbourhood at Toronto, Ontario. The goal of this project is to design a mixed-use building based on previous analyses of the neighbourhood.
The design had to be a part of these analyses that were about the grain of the city, the erosion of the buildings and the trees of the area. The program contains an art gallery on the main level with an “art-in-the-park” concept. It also has art classes in the basement and is an hotel on the upper levels.
First, the grain of the city is depicted by lines of change of material on the floor with walls following them representing the buildings. The lines are then translated on the back wall as thin vertical windows. In addition, the erosion can be found in the habitable windows, but also on the curtain wall of the ground level. The shape of the wall is based on the shape of the bicycle path next to the lake. Finally, the analysis on the trees inspired the trees and the walls of the park.
Furthermore, since one of the function of this building is an art gallery about the history of the neighbourhood, one can find that the main façade is based on the traditional style, in exception of the windows, but that it also detached from the floors. The occupant then feel that the façade is detached from the building as a piece of history and art.
