New Neighbour Help Center

This project, located at 816 Somerset West, is a building insert. The mandate is to design a service-oriented institution and a place to gather for immigrants.

The concept of the project is about openness to our society versus creating a sense of protection. In order to achieve this concept, a floating box can be found inside the building starting from the second floor. Its sides are also open to below. It is made of frosted glass so that occupants can feel protected while having a glint of what is happening around them. The main program is inside this box: a community place to gather, offices to discuss how to find a new job for example and the waiting room on the ground level that implies a space because to the structure of the box. Also, since the ground floor is open, from the street you can see through the building as a symbol of openness. Finally, the stairs are at the front of the building to force the occupants to watch what is happening on the street and in the city and to accustom them to this kind of dynamism, thus to help them to incorporate their new society.
